This is a second thesis required in France before one can supervise doctoral students. Although it contains mainly a summary of my own work, the background chapter and bibliography may be interesting to new students in the field. the document contains a French summary but is predominantly in English. In 2006 I taught an intensive course on the carbon cycle and atmospheric inversions at the CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation (C-MMACS) in Bangalore. Click here for a pdf copy of the lecture notes (lecturenotes5.pdf)
