Thematic Day: “Archaeometry of the Senses”

Thematic Day: “Archaeometry of the Senses”

Jérémy Jacob and Sigrid Mirabaud

19 September 2022 at the Institut National de l’Histoire de l’Art (Paris) – 2 Rue Vivienne, 75002 Paris

Thematic Day organised by the CAI-RN network, with the support of MITI/CNRS

The aim of the Thematic Day was to raise awareness of the senses within the archaeometry and conservation community. The aim was both to present some examples of work aimed at reconstructing past sensory environments and to question the use of the senses in the characterisation of study objects in archaeometry. The day was divided into two parts. The morning was devoted to scientific presentations, organised according to the five senses, which presented original work on the sensory environments of various periods, reconstructed using archaeometric techniques. The afternoon was devoted to workshops led by experts in the senses, during which participants discussed the use of the senses in characterising their objects of study, so as to arrive at common principles and keys to characterisation. Lunch was in keeping with the theme of the day. Anaïs Tondeur, a visual artist working at the frontier between science and art, accompanied the day.
