Reception of Valérie Masson-Delmotte at the Académie des Sciences

Valérie Masson-Delmotte is director of research at the CEA, at the Laboratoire des sciences du climat et de l’environnement (LSCE) of the Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace.

Valérie Masson-Delmotte is a member of the French High Council for the Climate and head of the Climate-Society Centre at the Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace. She co-chaired IPCC Group I from 2015 to 2023. Her research focuses on quantifying and understanding the mechanisms of past, present and future changes in climate and the water cycle.

Her work is based on palaeoclimatic reconstructions from natural archives (ice cores, tree rings), using the monitoring of stable isotopes of water in the atmospheric water cycle, particularly in the polar regions, and atmospheric modelling, notably through the ERC AWACA project that she is co-directing.

Valérie Masson-Delmotte has won numerous awards and honorary doctorates, ranging from fundamental research into climate science and climate change to sharing her knowledge with the general public.

“In the current context, I appreciate the importance of supporting scientific research, informing society’s choices with scientific facts and strengthening scientific diplomacy. I will do my utmost to contribute to these missions of the Académie des Sciences, which I thank for its confidence and support for climate science”, says the researcher, who is also a member of the French National Consultative Ethics Committee, vice-president of the Comité Éthique en commun, and a member of the Academia Europaea and the Académie des technologies.
