Transferring and measuring samples from the Beyond EPICA project

15,000 samples of the Beyond EPICA core are to be analyzed for water isotopic composition at the LSCE. These analyses will enable high-resolution reconstruction of climate variations over the past 1.2 million years. To obtain these results, and to store and reference all these samples, the GLACIO team had to get organized for the coming years. The first 8,000 samples arrived in the form of bits of ice in 2024, and the various stages in their preparation are detailed below.

While waiting for the arrival of the samples, the numbering of the bottles using the new labeling machine has begun.

The wait was long, but the crates containing the samples finally arrived from Bremerhaven

and they could be stored in a cold room.

Over several weeks, the samples were transferred into numbered bottles.

After letting the pieces of ice contained in bags thaw for a few hours, the water is then transferred into the bottles.

The whole team got involved!

Once the first bottles were available, the first measurements on the Picarro could begin.
