Inverse modeling of CO2 emissions based on satellite images and high-resolution transport simulations.

This work is framed in the ICO2NS project (funded by ESA) in collaboration with QAIrbon, in a project funded by BFTE and in a collaboration with SPASCIA.

  • CO2 plume emission quantification, based on the comparison of satellite observations and high-resolution transport simulations (<100m).
  • Advanced metrics for the comparison of observed and simulated plumes.
  • Machine Learning-based emission estimation, based on a database of simulated CO2 plumes.
  • Validation and comparison to light-weight “data-driven” methods.

Previous project (01/2024 – 07/2025) : inverse modeling of methane (CH4) emissions, based on the assimilation of satellite data.

This work is part of the SMART-CH4 (Satellite Monitoring of Atmospheric Methane) project, which is part of the EC-ESA Joint Earth System Science Initiative.

  • Inverse modeling of CH4 emissions in South America: sectoral emissions are analyzed in the framework of regional atmospheric inversions. Anthropogenic emissions of livestock and landfill, as well as natural emissions from wetland are particularly studied, because of the large uncertainties of these sectors.
  • CIF-CHIMERE : Inversions are performed with the platform CIF (Community Inversion Framework) and the regional chemical transport model CHIMERE.
  • Remote sensing: CH4 observations from TROPOMI (Sentinel-5P) are assimilated to constrain the emissions.
