Philippe Ciais, a physicist at the LSCE, received the prestigious ENI 2025 Award for Environmental Solutions in the presence of Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic. This award recognizes his remarkable work on the terrestrial carbon cycle and the study of its impacts on climate change.
His research has led to major advances in understanding the relationship between terrestrial greenhouse gas fluxes and climate. Philippe Ciais has been a pioneer in integrating cultivated ecosystems into global ecosystem models in order to better understand how carbon sinks can be managed to mitigate global warming.
During his career, he has coordinated numerous national and European projects, including the large-scale European program CARBOEUROPE, launched to quantify the greenhouse gas balance of the European continent.
Philippe Ciais has also been involved in coordinating the implementation of the European research infrastructure ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System), now a leading structure for climate change research. At the same time, he co-chaired the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) working group on integrated carbon observations and co-chaired the Global Carbon Project. In particular, he was the lead coordinating author of the chapter on the carbon cycle and other biogeochemical cycles in Working Group 1 of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report, published in 2013.
Philippe Ciais has authored more than 1,280 publications in A-ranked journals over the past 17 years.
