Seminar by Gabin Colombini: Soils and microplastics

Gabin Colombini (post-doc, UMR iEES, Paris) will give a seminar for laboratory members on Thursday, October 31 at 11 a.m. (room 1129, Bâtiment 714).

Title:  Soil pollution by microplastics: evolution of the field of research and science-policy interactions.

Abstract: Microplastics (MP) are plastic particles between 1 µm and 5 mm in size. They are emerging pollutants now present in all terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, with proven effects on human health and numerous organisms. Since the emergence of the term “microplastic” in 2004, numerous research projects have been carried out, initially in aquatic environments and subsequently in terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, microplastics are only one facet of plastic pollution, the scale of which is such that the United Nations Environment Programme has initiated an international treaty to put an end to plastic pollution, the content of which is still being negotiated by UN member countries.
The aim of this seminar is to present the problem of soil pollution by microplastics from two angles. The first will deal with the evolution of research on the subject, presenting in particular the analytical obstacles and the state of knowledge, based on pollution diagnosis studies on experimental sites. The second approach will be presented from the point of view of a scientist who is a member of the Coalition of Scientists for an Effective Treaty. The aim will be to present the issues at stake in the international treaty and the intrinsic obstacles to the negotiation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements.
