Following a thematic day on ‘Service and expertise through archaeological and conservation sciences’ organised by the CAI-RN network (Compétences Archéométriques Interdisciplinaires – Réseau National, MITI CNRS), the members of the CAI-RN Steering Committee who took part in the day wished to bring together and clarify in this text a number of the points raised during the discussions. This includes a brief definition of the terms ‘service’ and ‘expertise’ and a presentation of the different types of structures linked to the archaeometric community and carrying out these activities. This initial analysis of the current situation also suggests a number of avenues to explore
