A successful catchment science meeting was held in Santa Maria, Brazil, in September 2026

From 10 to 13 September 2026, about 30 researchers and students met at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, for the 6th Seminar of Catchment Monitoring and Evaluation of the Southern Cone and the 5th Forum of Geo-Hydro-Biology, including the CELESTE Lab international project coordinated in France by LSCE.

All the research groups from different States of Brazil (including Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco), Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia and France had the opportunity to present their research. Each presentation was followed by rich discussions. A field visit in the experimental catchment of Guarda Mor monitored by the GIPEHS group of UFSM was also organized. Most participants took the opportunity of the organization of the 16th Meeting of Soil Science in Southern Brazil (Reunião Sul-Brasileira de Ciência do Solo) in Santa Maria from 13 to 15 September 2026 to present their work and enjoy the poster and oral presentations of the ~500 participants of this regional soil science congress.

For the future, the participants agreed on the joint redaction of opinion papers, the organization of a CELESTE Lab event in São Paulo (Brazil) in 2027, and the organization of the 7th Seminar of Catchment Monitoring and Evaluation of the Southern Cone and the 6th Forum of Geo-Hydro-Biology in another Brazilian State in 2028 (with the groups from Paraná, Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco proposing their university as a potential candidate for organizing this event).
