Several members of the Glacio and Clim teams took part in 18 workshops (6 days) from February to May 2024 at the Etincelles in the Palais de la découverte, as part of the “1 chercheur 1 manip” program.
During these hour-long “atelier-manip”, which drew a total of over 300 participants, the speakers presented the analysis of an ice sample (a continuous flow conductivity analysis system designed and built at LSCE for the workshop). To do this, the ice is melted and the recovered water is passed through a conductivity probe, which varies its conductivity. These variations in conductivity illustrate past climate variations, in particular glacial-interglacial cycles. An accompanying presentation explains ice core research, from sampling to laboratory analysis and climate science results. A model of the core has also been produced by teams at the Palais de la découverte, illustrating the transformation of snow into ice and the trapping of air bubbles in ice. The Glacio team will be able to reuse the entire set-up (instruments, accessories and model) for other scientific outreach events.
