An international collaboration involving the LSCE (CEA-CNRS-UVSQ) has established that major volcanic eruptions were able to supply stocks of nitrates that could be assimilated by living organisms, even before the existence of nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
One hypothesis put forward by scientists is that the great explosive eruptions could have produced large quantities of nitrogenous species that could have been assimilated by living organisms.
