Potential carbon dioxide removal from enhanced weathering by ecosystem responses to powdered rock

In a new article in Nature Geoscience, an international research team led by Daniel Goll from the LSCE explored the use of soil amendment with powdered basalt. This is a fully developed NET which can be co-deployed in existing land systems and is thus suited for rapid upscaling. The principle of this NET is to enhance the natural reaction of carbon dioxide with weathering minerals. Basalt is an abundant rock resource that when ground to powder and spread on the land surface reacts with carbon dioxide and removes it from the atmosphere (abiotic pathway). Besides, basalt improves soil fertility and thereby can enhance ecosystem carbon storage (biotic pathway), in particular in ecosystems with impoverished soils.
