Luminescence of quartz as a paleoprecipitation proxy in marine sediment cores

Luminescence is generally known as a dating method for burial ages of sediments, but recently, another application for these physical phenomena has arisen. In 2019, we successfully used the luminescence sensitivity of quartz as a proxy for continental precipitation in a marine sediment core collected off the northeast Brazilian coast. Luminescence is a physical phenomenon with two main steps. First, the material absorbs ionizing radiation, and then it emits light when stimulated. The luminesce sensitivity can be understood as the efficiency of the material in producing luminescence. Our new proxy relies on the fact that the luminescence sensitivity changes are related to the history of the quartz in the soil process. I will also present the progress we have been making in building a luminescence scanner for marine sediment cores.
