The Institue of earth surface dynamics of the Faculty of Geoscience and Environment opens a position of PhD student in Statistical climatology.

This position is opened in the context of a SNF project, in parnership with two French research institutions : LSCE-IPSL and INRAe-BioSP. Travels to these partner institutions are to be expected.

Expected start date : 01.01.2022 or to be agreed upon.

Position duration : 1 year originally, with extensions for up to 4 years total duration.

Activity rate : 100%

Workplace : Lausanne Mouline, Geopolis building

Your responsibilities

Most of the workload will be devoted to a PhD thesis in statistical climatology. This will include conducting theoretical developments, writing of computer codes, redaction of scientific articles, presentation of the research outcomes at international conferences, participation in project meetings and in the general life of the research institute.

A smaller component of the workload (about 15%) will consist in assisting with teaching and research duties : teaching activities under the supervision of a professor, research work not directly related to the personal PhD topic, technical and administrative tasks related to the activities of the Institute.

Your qualifications

Global circulation models are our only way of glimpsing our potential climatic futures. Multiple models have been produced by different teams around the world, each model having its own characteristics, including biases and uncertainties.

The research will tap into fields of climatology and statistics (with a particular emphasis on spatio-temporal statistics) as well as computational approaches such as machine learning and computer vision.

The chosen candidate will have a master's degree in environmental science, climatology, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related domain focused on numerical modeling in the geosciences.

A requirement for this position is a good base in applied mathematics and programming, demonstrated through academic works (e.g. MSc thesis or publications). Knowledge in geostatistics or machine learning, experience in handling climate or remote sensing datasets are advantages. The ideal candidate should be committed to conducting a 4-years PhD thesis on the development of data-intensive numerical methods, including acquiring advanced knowledge of the related domains.

Excellent skills in written and oral English are required. Working knowledge of French language is preferable but not necessary.
